Women's tango clothing: Website only (alphabetical)
Aga Mróz / The Gift of Dance
Aga is a NYC tanguera who has a gorgeous and very large collection of tango clothes. She also sells the tango shoe brand "Mono". She sells her items in some of the milongas but also has a showroom right here in New York City, located in Jackson Hts, Queens, a minute away from main train station on Roosevelt Ave. Visit her Etsy store at: Aga Mróz / The Gift of Dance or her website at AGA be-You-tiful.
Bettie Page Clothing
In the same vein as "Stop Staring" and "Blue Velvet" is Bettie Page Clothing with "vintage and retro clothing for the modern woman" and it's the truth! They have great sexy old styles but with modern fabrics that move with your moves... so you can dance the night away but look amazing too.
Blue Velvet Vintage
Last of the "modern retro" listings but certainly NOT least is Blue Velvet Vintage. Same idea as the above three sites but check this one out too. I should have listed it first I guess because they have a HUGE selection and some very unusual stuff. If you need something for a theme milonga, check here first.
Butter By Nadia
These dresses are great for tango. The dress dances while you are dancing! And the designer was a dancer! Especially check out the Signature Wrap dresses, both in jersey and satin. You can wrap these dresses in hundreds of ways, literally. It basically gives you hundreds of dresses in one dress. You can wrap it conservatively to go to work, then re-wrap in a sexy style to go straight to tango. There are a whole bunch of gorgeous colors to choose from, and there are stores that sell them here in NYC. Their factory is actually in Brooklyn NYC and they have sample sales. If you sign up for their emails and/or their facebook page, you can get all the info, or you can just sign up for the Tango Stuff NYC facebook page and find out about all sales and deals. I post every sale and deal I find on there. The stores that sell their dresses are listed on their site. The store I bought my Butter dresses from is called A Tempo, 290 Columbus Avenue between 73/74.
Coco's Dancewear
Etsy site for inexpensive, handmade tango clothes for women from a company in Croatia. They offer tango skirts, tops, pants, and dresses at very low prices and high quality.
Cybernet Plaza
Best website for inexpensive party dresses. You can find old fashioned-looking classic shapes with crinoline and taffeta. The dresses I've bought from them are all very well-made and beautiful in a classic way that you don't see very often in most stores.
Discount Dance Supply
Discount Dance Supply is where I used to always buy my pink and black seamed tights for ballet & modern...but I still find certain cool items from here that are perfect for tango. You might find some interesting things here, or maybe all the pictures of little kids in ballet outfits will drive you insane. Either way, it should be entertaining so go take a look.
EK Clothing
Skirts, pants, dresses and tops from ~$20-$40, all of them made to dance in and all of them super affordable.
Enz's!
And yet another great little vintage modern shop. Check it out too!
Fredericks
There is no store in NYC for Fredericks of Hollywood but just buy things online and send them back if they don't work out. This is a good place to get those Cuban stockings in both nude with black seam and black with black seam (and if they are too long…you can either sew the toes shorter yourself or the tailor at a cleaners can do it very quickly and cheaply)
Leg Avenue
Get really great stockings straight from the source at Leg Avenue. You can also find some cool costumes and lingerie pieces here to mix and match with "normal" clothes and voila, an unusual and interesting tango outfit is born.
Loehman's
Loehman's is delicious. I have always found great things there and at ridiculously affordable prices. A few years ago the storefronts went out of business but they switched to being online only, so you can still get their great deals!
Mimi Pinzon
Unique design of tango dresses by designer Mimi Pinzon. Everything from the most over-the-top sparkly stage tango outfits to some beautiful designs for daily milonga wearing. Official sponsor of the world cup tango championship in BA and of the U.S. tango championship in San Francisco.
Nocturna Boutique
This store carries the entire Roxana Vincelli designer tango wear line! It's based in BsAs but they ship internationally and it's owned and run by the wonderful Eva Karsza who will absolutely make sure your packages get to you.
Poema by Hannah Louise
This is a line of completely one-of-a-kind handmade tango clothes by a tanguera in Portland, Oregon. They are very cool, hip and modern but also very artistic and romantic. Here is her description of her clothes: "Poema means silk, feathers, fossils, gilded edges, tea-stained chiffon, layered sediment, oil on water, oriental rugs, smeared rainbows. I choose fabrics that evoke the freakish beauty of the natural world, combining them with old-world glamour and touches of modern sleekness. The poema silhouette is sensual, comfortable, and celebratory of the female form in motion." If you want something truly unique, you should check this place out!
Soft Chocolates by Betsy Hendersen
I found Soft Chocolates through Facebook and immediately bought several skirts. When they arrived, I was amazed at how they fit me, as if they were made on my body! I bought the lace godot skirt and wore it right away. It is absolutely incredible and brings many compliments every time I wear it. I've since ordered several other dresses, skirts, pants, and tops from Soft Chocolates and all of them have been the same high quality, fit-as-if-made-on-my-body, stylish, wonderful clothes and all made for tango.
Stop Staring! I love the name of this store. Seriously, how can you go wrong? Of course it means exactly the opposite of what it says. Take a look at these über sexy vintage-style-with-modern-fabric dresses and you will fall in love!
Tangoleva
Really gorgeous tango clothes, many of them perfect for performing in or just for dancing every night. In addition to marvelous dresses, they also have wonderful skirts, tops and pants. Many of my tango outfits that people ask me about all the time have come from here, and I often embellish them with my own personal touches. Read here about embellishing your tango outfits!
Timeless Trends
Do you want to wear corsets? Buy beautiful, extremely well-made corsets that are also actually affordable from this online corset shop. Specially recommended by the Queen of the Night, the hostess of the NYC All Night Milonga.
Tulip Bridal
I love to wear sexy chiffon and lace bolero jackets and I recently found a great place to buy them. It's located in Hawaii, so if you want to take a trip there to see them in person, that could be really fun! But you can also order online and it'll arrive at your door lickety split. I've received amazing compliments from people on these jackets, take a look and see for yourself.
Unique Vintage
If you want to wear some new old-fashioned dresses that don't have that old-fashioned smell, this is the site for you. My favorites are the pin-up fashions and flapper girl dresses.
Victoria's Secret
The secret about Victoria's Secret is that they have lots of clothing online that they don't have in the stores, and lots of it is very tango-friendly. Check it out!
There are times that you might need a nice performance dress or maybe just a really extra fancy dress with sequins and beading. Recently I discovered that I can buy full length dresses from companies who custom-make dresses online and then have them altered. I've had RAVE reviews from these dresses. These are some of the links I have bought dresses from. The time span is long, it generally takes around 20-30 days for the dress to be made and another 5-10 days for shipping so you'll need to plan ahead. Then there is the time for tailoring, but it is all worth it for a gorgeous dress made exactly to your size measurements. Use your imagination and think of the dresses in a shorter form. I like to cut them so the front comes to just below my knees and the back is about 2 inches longer. I also usually add at least one slit on the right thigh so that they move well. See the tailoring page for my favorite recommended tailors!
