Stockings!
People ask me all the time where I find the plethora of stockings I wear in the milongas. Well, here it is! All my information for you all!
Turtle Bay Chemists
901 2nd Ave # 1 at 48th street
(212) 752-5151
This is another wacky New York store. It's about the size of a large closet and it's mostly a pharmacy but they just happen, for whatever reason, to pack a huge amount of amazing stockings in the front of the store. This is my go-to store for everything from those great cuban stockings (with the black line up the back, both in nude and black) to many patterned thigh-highs, capri and full stockings to elegant sheer black plain stockings. I buy most of my stockings here.
Elegance
212-736-5306
This is one of those crazy New York places you discover randomly and always think about and return to. This gem is strangely placed in the Penn Station main concourse which is a downright weird and depressing place. The store didn't have a card (though I did just finagle their phone number the other day!) and no way to explain where to find it so I'll attempt to explain. It is on the Amtrak level. If you were catching an Amtrak train (as I often am to go to see my family in Virginia) and if you were facing the area where they sell the tickets, then turn around and face the other way. There are waiting rooms for Amtrak... on the other side of those waiting rooms on the right side of the concourse is Elegance. If you walk around there you'll find it. It's not too hard to find, it's only stockings, stockings and more stockings. Their selection is quite incredible. I definitely recommend it, especially if you happen to be there anyway!
Fredericks of Hollywood
www.Fredericks.com
There is no store in NYC for Fredericks of Hollywood but just buy things online and send them back if they don't work out. This is also a good place to get those Cuban stockings in both nude with black seam and black with black seam (and if they are too long…you can either sew the toes shorter yourself or the tailor at a cleaners can do it very quickly and cheaply). It's also the place I bought a pair of stockings that EVERYONE asks me about when I wear them. They are plain old capris but with elastic sewn on the bottom that wraps around your lower leg like a ballet slipper. They're incredibly comfortable but one warning, only wear them if you want a lot of attention because you'll get it!
