“Anyone can buy an outfit off a mannequin,” said Marshal Cohen, NPD’s chief analyst (NPD Group tracks retail sales). “Having good accessories means you’ve got your game on.”

Lord Willy's
Tip from a great well-known NYC tanguero who dresses faaaabulously:  Here's another place I like. Pricey but...listen, once a guy has the basic suit, it's great to mix it up on a custom made shirt or gorgeous tie. Worth the investment.

Michael Andrews Bespoke
Ok men, this is the place if you really want to splurge and get custom-made clothes. It is definitely more money than you will spend at a discount place but these clothes will last forever and you will certainly look sharp! This lower east side store has made-to-measure shirts for $95-$145 available in more than 200 fabrics, and hand-sewn superfine wool suits for $700-$,1200. By appointment only. (little tip for ya, check out my men's online section for custom-made suits and shirts that cost a lot less!)

Macy's
The classic for a large variety of fairly affordable (albeit boring) suits and dress shirts, as well as more casual clothes. As the tip above says, get a plain suit and then accessorize to make it more interesting. They have two New York City locations, the famous flagship store in Manhattan and an outpost in Brooklyn. The Brooklyn store is a little-known New York local secret because the Manhattan store is always packed but the Brooklyn store is always empty. In fact, I can't figure out how they stay in business, but they do.
Manhattan store: 151 West 34th St. between Broadway/6th ave and 7th ave. (Broadway and 6th avenue cross right in front of Macy's)
